the artist

Lyle practiced the art of Gyotaku, which is a traditional Japanese method of printing fish, dating back to the mid 1800’s. He spent many years living in Japan learning this art form that honors the fish.

Before the invention of the camera, fishermen would use a piece of cloth, black ink and apply various pressures with their hands to capture the image of a special fish for their personal record keeping.

Lyle spent his afternoons at the dock weight station of Hotel Palmas de Cortez offering this same traditional process to fishermen in Los Barriles to honor their catch.
